Nijmegen
Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands, the second to be recognized as such in Roman times, and in 2005 it celebrated its 2,000th anniversary. Today, its population amounts to 179,000.
Few Roman remains are visible in the city, for instance, a fragment of the old city wall near the casino and the foundations of the amphi theatre traced in the paving of the present-day Rembrandtstraat. Not many very old buildings are left in town but there are still a few noteworthy sights. Valkhof hill downtown features a Carolingian chapel (8th/9th century AD) and a small remainder of an imperial castle that was demolished in 1798.
Nijmegen is a lively community with an attractive city centre hosting a large number of shops, cafés and restaurants. The 25,000 students of Radboud University and the 36,000 students of HAN University of Applied Sciences add the flair of the young generation.
The city has long been known for its annual Four Days Marches, beginning on the third Tuesday of each July. Over 40,000 participants from about 70 countries undertake four days of walking with distances ranging from 30 to 50 km. The marches are supplemented with festivities in the whole city.
Nijmegen has an oceanic climate. For the present Nijmegen weather forecast visit meteoblue.
